Dr McConnell is an Australian-trained Interventional Neuroradiologist, possessing extensive experience in both diagnostic and procedural ultrasound.
Annually, he performs more than 500 endovascular procedures. His medical education began at Flinders University, where he earned a Bachelor of Medicine and a Bachelor of Surgery. Subsequently.
He completed a specialty training in Radiology at Royal North Shore Hospital, followed by a Fellowship in Interventional Radiology and a two-year Fellowship in Neurointervention, for which he was awarded the CCINR accreditation.

What is a vein clinic?

Who treats vein issues?

Is the premises pram and wheelchair friendly?
Yes, all 3 of our clinic locations are easily accessible for those with wheelchairs or strollers. There are ramps situated for easy access.
Is there parking nearby?
All our clinics have ample parking that is within reasonable walking distance to our clinics.
Will a qualified Doctor be performing my treatment?
Dr. McConnell will perform all treatments. Dr. McConnell is a highly qualified endovascular interventionalist with years of training and experience.
Is the treatment painful?
Treatment is not considered painful, and Dr. McConnell ensures all patients are comfortable during treatment. A local anaesthetic is administered to ensure treatments are as painless as possible.
How long does the treatment take?
Treatments can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the type of procedure required.
- 40-60 minutes: Endovenous laser ablation or Endovenous radiofrequency ablation
- 30 minutes: Medical glue treatment (VenaSealTM)
- 30-60 minutes: Ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy
- 1-2 hours: Ambulatory phlebectomy
As we focus on each patient individually, the treatment most suited to your condition and procedure specifics will be discussed at your initial consult.
What is the recovery time?
This depends on the treatment specific to your condition, but patients can expect to return to most activities immediately post-procedure.
Most treatments are followed by the application of compression stockings, which must be worn for at least 1–3 weeks depending on the treatment provided. Patients will be advised to go for a 30-minute walk immediately after the procedure.
*It is recommended you arrange transport to and from the procedure, as the anaesthesia can make driving difficult.
Are there follow-up appointments to track my progress?
Absolutely. For most procedures, a follow-up appointment will be scheduled for 2 weeks after your procedure to assess the progress of your recovery.
An ultrasound will be performed to exclude the very small risk of deep vein thrombosis.
What is the cost of a procedure?
It is a Medicare requirement that you have:

- A referral letter to the specialist
Procedure prices vary from patient to patient based on the severity of their condition and the treatments required. A formal quotation will be provided to you at your initial consultation, a portion for which Medicare-registered patients will be able to receive a Medicare rebate.
Can Vein Doctors Sydney assist with removing spider veins?
Yes, we can assist with removing spider veins. Spider veins can be treated with several types of procedures that ultimately cause them to collapse and disappear.
